Workshop: Radical candour: How to have those difficult conversations

This lively, interactive session is based on Kim Stott's 'Radical Candour Model' (2017), which recommends that feedback to trainee teachers should be:

  • An evaluation of issues
  • Based on evidence/observed data
  • Empathic

It explores the underlying theory, before asking participants to reflect on a series of case studies and contribute to the discussion as it unfolds. Perfect for new/experienced Subject and Professional Mentors alike.

Chair: Kate Hamer

Presenter: Paul Taylor McCartney

Presentation: Engaging with “Now Teach” a national network for career changers

Mentoring a career-changer presents particular challenges. There is a huge amount that an older entrant to teaching brings, but they have as much to unlearn as to learn. Now Teach is a charity which recruits and supports successful professionals into teaching. Over the years they have learned a great deal about the approaches which can work best. This session, which will include presentations from a Now Teacher and Now Teach mentor, will share some of what they have learned, and how they may be able to support you as a mentor.
