How soon could schools reopen? Expert comment from Dr Michael Wyness

The leader of the Association of School and College Leaders has suggested that the earliest that schools could reopen following lockdown is 1 June. Dr Michael Wyness from the University of Warwick Centre for Education Studies has commented on how feasible this is and some of the factors that schools will have to consider when reopening to pupils.

Education and Psychology Research Active Staff Network (EPRAN) 2019/20 Seminar Programme

The Education and Psychology Research Active Staff Network (EPRAN) has prepared an exciting and varied calendar of events for the 2019/20 academic year including seminars from colleagues from across the university, and external colleagues from UCL and the University of Exeter.

Briefly, the topics of the seminars will be:

16th October 2019 (1.30-3pm): Research and practice in education settings, including pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)

20th November 2019 (12.30-2pm): Psychological outcomes and interventions for adults with autism and/or intellectual disabilities

4th March 2020 (12.30-2pm): Transitions from primary to secondary school for children with Down syndrome and Williams syndrome

29th April 2020 (12.30-2pm): A contemporary approach to educational policy making for pupils with SEND

10th June 2020 (12.30-2pm): Research involving fathers

EPRAN is a network for research active staff and post-graduate research students at the University of Warwick to share research findings related to education and psychology. We also aim to promote inter-departmental and external networking and research collaborations.

Professor Peter Elias, CBE, Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences

Peter EliasProfessor Peter Elias, CBE, of IER has been conferred as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. This Fellowship is a huge accolade. Fellows are drawn from academics, practitioners and policymakers, marking the impact of their work through the use of social science for public benefit.

Professor Chris Warhurst, Director of IER said:

‘It is another indication of the very high esteem with which Peter is held for his work on, amongst other things over the past thirty years, occupational classification schemes in the UK and internationally and, more recently, developing protocols for the use of Big data for the OECD countries.’

PAIS presents the fourth panel in our weekly live-streamed Global Insights series with our partners in Canada, the US, Ethiopia and Germany

This week’s panel will discuss the immediate effects of COVID-19 on global migration, internal displacement and refugee protection, and what the pandemic might mean for the movement of peoples across borders in the future.

Panelists

Allehone Abebe is a Senior Legal Officer at UNHCR Liaison Office to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Maria Koinova is Reader in International Relations and chair of the British International Studies Association working group on the “International Politics of Migration, Refugees and Diaspora” at the University of Warwick (UK)

Alison Mountz is Professor of Geography and Canada Research Chair in Global Migration at Wilfrid Laurier University (Canada). She is Director of the International Migration Research Centre at the BSIA.

Tazreena Sajjad currently serves as Senior Professorial Lecturer in the Global Governance, Politics and Security (GGPS) Program in the School of International Service (SIS) at American University in Washington D.C. (USA)

Maurice Stierl is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Warwick (UK).

Moderated by Ann Fitz-Gerald, Director, Balsillie School of International Affairs.
