£600,000 Funding Award for Centre for the History of Medicine

The Centre for the History of Medicine, based at Warwick’s History Department, has won a £600,000 funding award from the Wellcome Trust for a five-year programme on the 'Cultures and Practices of Health.'


British Academy Lecture: Charity and Usury

The 2003 British Academy Annual Italian Lecture will be hosted by the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance. Given by Professor Brian Pullan, University of Manchester, the lecture will take place in the Auditorium, Manufacturing Engineering Centre on Tuesday 4 March at 5pm.

Language - computation to conversation

Language surrounds us. Everyone picks up a language when they are too young to be aware that they are learning a language. You don’t have to go to school to learn your first language. It happens so easily that it is easy to take for granted. Easy as dropping off an apple tree. How hard is that? Well, understanding how things drop off apple trees has made for interesting science.

HRC Success

The Humanities Research Centre (HRC) has had its most successful year to date in terms of overall attendance at its different public events. The Centre continued to sponsor a number of Faculty based interdisciplinary research seminars and supported a variety of conferences and symposia from 'Ancient Warfare' to 'J.M.Coetzee', which attracted an international array of speakers and participants.

Discussing the Future of Faith Schools

The 2002 series of Warwick Policy Briefings got underway last month with a discussion on the future of faith schools led by Professor Robert Jackson, Director of the Warwick Religions and Education Research Unit in the Institute of Education. The policy briefing also involved Lord Dearing who conducted a major review of church schools for the Church of England, Marilyn Mason, Education Officer for the British Humanist Association and Abdullah Trevathan who is head of Islamia Primary School in London, the first state-funded Muslim school in the UK.
