MASDOC Doctoral Training Centre
A new Centre for Doctoral Training, MASDOC, funded by a £4M grant from the EPSRC, and run jointly between the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics is being launched this year.
MASDOC at Warwick is one of the first Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) dedicated to mathematical sciences. It will create a new generation of highly employable researchers. It is hoped these researchers will contribute to the long term scientific, technological and economic well being of the UK.
Up to 10 UK funded studentships for the four year MASDOC doctoral training programme, providing fees and a stipend, will be available for the first entry in October 2010. Similar funding will be available for entry in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
The MASDOC doctoral training programme has a broad scope, but is rooted in four themes:
- Analysis
- Computation and Numerical Analysis
- Probability
- Statistics
These are not only major areas in the mathematical sciences but are also key to developing the mathematical and statistical methodology that increasingly will be required to meet significant modern challenges such as climate change and energy production. Other application areas include nano-sciences for technological and medical applications, molecular modelling of materials, and models arising in ecology, epidemiology and data mining.
In addition to developing an original research project, each PhD student will receive a formal programme of taught coursework to broaden their skills and enhance their technical and interdisciplinary knowledge. Students will be prepared to develop mathematical and statistical frameworks for emerging applications which address the scientific and technological challenges that face us in the modern world.
The MASDOC Undergraduate Conference: Challenges in Applied Mathematics and Statistics is being held as a launch event for MASDOC on the 12th and 13th February 2010. The conference is for final year undergraduate students interested in funded PhD research in the mathematical sciences.
There will be talks from Warwick academics and an opportunity to interact with current research students. Places are limited and so applicants need to apply early.
