The University of Warwick has scored a hat-trick of sporting achievements, including student leadership programmes, student awards and new sport accreditations.

Three students have been accepted into the British Universities and Colleges Sport’s (BUCS) Women's Leadership Programme, a student has won the BUCS Chris Potter Award, and the University has achieved 3* status within the BUCS Football Accredited Universities programme.

These accomplishments in football leadership and inclusion reflect Warwick Sport’s commitment to empowering female leaders within the University’s student community.

Katy O’Brien wins BUCS Chris Potter Award

Student Katy O’Brien (third year, Philosophy) has been honoured with the BUCS Chris Potter Award for ‘Student Volunteer of the Year’.

This award, given on 18th July 2024, celebrates student volunteers who have made significant contributions to university or community work, and provides a competitive edge for those aspiring to work in football after graduating from their degree.

Katy has demonstrated exceptional dedication to The University of Warwick Women’s Football and Futsal Club (UWWFC), serving as President and leading the club to its most successful year to date.

She was nominated by Marcus Henson from Warwick’s Student’s Union who said, “Katy has used the club’s large membership to benefit other women’s clubs across the University, and has worked with Warwick SU to establishthe ‘Sexism in Sport Task Force’ to champion women in male-dominated sports.”

“Katy’s dedication as a sports volunteer has impacted not only UWWFC but also the wider community, reaching countries from across the world. Katy leaves a lasting legacy that is deserving of the Chris Potter Student Volunteer of the Year award.”

University of Warwick achieves 3* football accreditation

In another significant milestone, The University of Warwick has achieved 3* status within the BUCS Football Accredited Universities programme for the 2023-24 academic year.

This is the highest rating that a university can attain, reflecting the dedication to providing comprehensive opportunities both on and off the pitch for all students.

This accreditation underscores the University’s commitment to excellence in sports provision and the continuous efforts to create an inclusive and supportive environment for student-athletes.
