We have produced central guidance on the recommended specification for any device you use to undertake your academic work. Your department may provide alternative guidance, you should follow that instead of this central guidance.

It is not essential to buy a new device to study at Warwick – if you already have a reliable laptop under three years old, it will likely be sufficient. If you plan to buy a new computer, you can get a student discount from several retailers.

IT Services computer work areas are available across Gibbet Hill, Westwood and main campus. All students can use work areas (you'll need your University ID card to access most of them).

All work area computers are connected to the internet, University network, work area printers and Library catalogue. They run Windows 10 and have Microsoft 365 apps installed (except A0.01 in Mathematics and Statistics, which runs CentOS Linux).

You need to register for an IT Account in order to use the University's computing facilities.

How to register a new student user account.

As a new student, you will have been given a unique University of Warwick user code. This starts with a 'u' followed by a string of 7 digits. Your user code needs to be paired with the password you created on registration.

Use your IT Account to connect to the eduroam network while studying.

If you are moving into on-campus accommodation you can use the eduroam network or the wired network using the connection points provided.

When you register for your IT account, we’ll give you a Microsoft 365 account that includes:

• An email address.
• 1TB of storage in OneDrive - personal storage that can be accessed from anywhere and allows you to share files.
• Microsoft 365 - including Teams, Planner, Calendars, Contacts and Tasks.

Your email address will take the form of Firstname.Surname@warwick.ac.uk - e.g. john.doe@warwick.ac.uk or john.doe.23@warwick.ac.uk. The format will depend on availability when you register.

About 30 minutes after registering for your IT account, you can access your Warwick email using Outlook.

Microsoft 365 includes Microsoft Teams, which you can use to:

• Chat online, in groups or one-to-one
• Share documents

If you are using computers, laptops or other devices on the University network, and handling University data, you need to make sure they are secured against malware, hackers and accidental loss or theft.

We recommend using the following pieces of software, depending on what operating system you are using.

Windows 10 & 11 have Microsoft Defender Antivirus built in.

Apple macOS

macOS includes built-in antivirus technology called XProtect.

Linux users are advised to download and install ClamAV.

Moodle is the University's central Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

All taught modules have a Moodle space for shared resources, lecture slides and recordings, and much more.

Tabula is a web application used by academic departments.

They can use it to manage coursework assignments, allocate you to small teaching groups (such as seminars, tutorials, lab groups and workshops), monitor your attendance at specific points during your course, and provide feedback to you. This can include marks, feedback on assignments and records of meetings with your personal tutor. You can also see your timetable here.

The University has strict regulations about the use of computing facilities, which all users are required to accept before they are assigned an IT Account. They cover authorisation, copyright and defamation. Disciplinary procedures are in place to deal with breaches of these regulations. The regulations incorporate conditions for acceptable use of the national academic IT network, JANET.
