REF 2029 Code of Practice submitted to Research England for their approval

The University of Warwick’s REF 2029 Code of Practice was submitted to Research England for approval on Monday 11 May, following a university-wide consultation with staff during February and March.

Consultation feedback highlighted a need for greater precision and clarity throughout the document. This has informed a series of revisions, including structural improvements to enhance accessibility. A new introductory section, ‘How to use this Code of Practice’, has been added, and each major section now begins with a summary outlining its purpose and importance.

Concerns about ambiguity in Part 2, ‘Identifying Staff with Significant Responsibility for Research’, have been addressed. The revised text clarifies which contract types contribute to the volume measure and confirms that Significant Responsibility for Research is determined by role expectations.

The Code now also makes explicit that output selection will be quality-led, grounded in excellence and disciplinary fit. Guidance for multi-department Units of Assessment has been strengthened, and content relating to responsible metrics has been consolidated in line with our commitments to responsible research assessment.

Research England has indicated that feedback and approval are expected to take at least three months. Once approved, the Code will be formally adopted to support REF 2029 decision-making.

We are very grateful to all colleagues, departments, staff engagement networks, and Trade Unions who participated in the consultation. Your contributions have strengthened the clarity and transparency of our processes and helped establish a robust and consistent framework for our REF 2029 submission.
