Effective literature searching (I1R)

This workshop will enable you to develop skills in creating an effective search strategy including: selecting appropriate resources, thinking about relevant search terms, making the most of advanced search features, saving searches and creating alerts to keep you up to date with the latest research.

By the end of the workshop you will have:

  • begun a structured plan for a comprehensive search of the literature

  • searched for books, journals, theses and conference papers in your research area

  • had the opportunity to set up an article alerting service

  • learnt about citation searching and impact factors

  • learnt about advanced search techniques and a structured approach to information evaluation

  • learnt how to request articles and materials not available from the Library.

Who is it for? Suitable for all postgraduate research students, especially those in the early stages of a research degree

Is any preparation required? Yes. You will have the opportunity to develop a search strategy during the session, so please come prepared with your own research question or another search question of your choice.

If you have your own laptop or tablet device, it would be helpful if you could bring it to the workshop. Otherwise, a laptop will be provided during the session.

Before attending this workshop, you should already be familiar with searching for information on the Internet and aware of basic search techniques.
