Understanding academic writing (W1R)
This is a focused introduction to writing at PhD level and makes a firm distinction between academic and non-academic writing. It outlines the main types of academic writing, with accent on those specific to research students: abstracts, reports, (literature) reviews, research proposals and others.
By the end of this workshop, you will have:
- gained an understanding of the style and content of writing as a process of communication
- assessed the difference between academic writing and other forms
- defined academic writing (content and purpose)
- learned about the main types of writing at postgraduate level
- considered a lit review and abstract example.

Who is it for? Postgraduate research students at the start of their degree and those seeking a basic grounding in academic writing. To register for this workshop, you must be enrolled on (or recently graduated from) one of the following degrees: PhD, MPhil, Masters by Research, EngD, EdD, professional doctorate.
