While you might be eager to dive into your new life as a student, it's important that you still make the time to stay active and look after your physical health amidst your busy university schedule.

From providing you with opportunities to make friends to helping you focus on your studies, being active while at university can have many far-reaching benefits for students .

If you're interested in learning how you can start getting active during your time at university, here are five simple ways to get started:

1. Join the campus gym

One of the fastest ways to jumpstart an active lifestyle at university is by becoming a member of the gym on campus.

Having a gym readily available as an on-campus facility makes it incredibly easy for you to incorporate exercise into your university schedule.

Gyms are the best place for anybody looking to get active as the diverse range of exercise equipment typically found at a gym can cater to almost every workout routine and help you achieve your fitness goals.

In addition, gyms traditionally host a variety of fitness classes and group activities for people of all skill levels to get involved with - so even if you're just starting your fitness journey, you'll find plenty of options that suit your needs.

2. Join a sports club

Participating in student sports clubs during your university years is another exceptional way to stay active and make the most of your time at university.

Sports clubs offer a fun and engaging platform to stay physically active, develop essential life skills, and connect with fellow students who share your passion.

The university sports clubs also go far beyond the ‘typical’ selection of sports that you might find out and about, and with 63 different clubs available to join, there truly is something for everyone.

Whether it’s through team sports or individual sports, joining a sports club allows you to stay active, make friends, relieve stress, and gives you the chance to experience the thrill of competition while studying at university.

3. Schedule short exercise breaks between studies

With a busy academic schedule, it can be easy to forget to make time for exercising.

Help counter this by doing short bursts of exercise during your study breaks.

Stay on track by creating a written schedule for both your studies and workouts and be sure to stick to your schedule rigorously.

By allocating set times for exercising between your studies and treating them as if they were important appointments, you can ensure that you keep active while at university without taking too much time away from your university work.

Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle requires consistency, and this will be made much easier by scheduling your workout times and fitting it around your learning.

4. Start active commuting

A simple and easy way to get active while at university is through integrating exercise into your commute to lectures.

Commuting to lectures is something you’ll be doing regularly as a student, so having the opportunity to exercise while on your journey is a great way to get active while also attending to your university commitments.

If the distance permits it, instead of taking the bus or driving to your classes, try walking or cycling. If you live too far from campus for that to be a feasible option, consider getting off public transportation a few stops early and covering the rest by foot.

5. Try out yoga

Another fantastic way to get active while at university is through the practice of Yoga.

Yoga is a tremendous form of exercise for students as it's low-impact and a terrific way to relax and relieve stress, making it extremely helpful for when you have a busy university schedule.

Another benefit of Yoga is that it can be done entirely within your own home, making it very useful to take part in alongside your studies.

If you’re new to yoga or prefer exercising in groups, there are also plenty of yoga classes available, so you can find a way of taking part that best suits you.

There are many ways for you to get active during your time at university. By joining the gym and participating in sports clubs you'll have access to exercise facilities and have plenty of opportunities to make new friends who share your passion for fitness.

Furthermore, through scheduling exercise between your studies and trying alternative commuting options, you will be able to seamlessly incorporate regular exercise into your daily schedule.

Don't let your studies and social life completely dominate your time at university – make time for exercise and enjoy a more enriching and healthier university experience.
