Screenings and Diagnostic Assessments

Women studying in the library

If you suspect you have dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and/or attention and concentration issues, a screening can help you explore this, advising you on the next steps. This might include recommendations for a full diagnostic assessment, which can provide answers about Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs) and generate a diagnostic report that supports reasonable adjustments, as well as your Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) application. Book an appointment with us and we'll support you in this journey.

Screenings are not diagnostic in nature but they are a helpful opportunity to reflect on any difficulties you might have experienced for a while, to discuss their impact on your learning and to explore options going forward. The Disability Services team will support and provide you with all the necessary information, helping you with any decisions you make.

We can offer screenings for:

  • Dyslexia
  • Dyspraxia
  • Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC)
  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Once you have met with the Disability Team to discuss your circumstances or following an initial in house screening, you may wish to pursue a complete adult diagnostic assessment for Specific Learning Differences (SpLDs).

The Disability Team can provide information about local assessors or you can contact any other Educational Psychologist or suitable assessor with a practicing certificate from PATOSS (Professional Association of Teachers Of Students with Specific learning difficulties).

Diagnostic assessments for ADHD/ADD

If you require an assessment for ADHD/ADD you must check the assessor or Educational Psychologist can carry out this type of assessment. You can also speak to your GP about getting an assessment via the NHS, especially if you want to discuss medication or any impact on your mental wellbeing.

Diagnostic assessments for SpLD's and Autism

Specific learning difficulties assessments are conducted by either a psychologist or an assessor with a PATOSS practising certificate, in line with the SpLD Assessment Standards Committee (SASC) guidanceLink opens in a new window.

If you would like to explore routes for autism assessments, you should firstly consult your GP or local health service. You may also want to consider discussing the 'right to choose' options with your GP, or medical professional. See your choices in the NHSLink opens in a new window.
