Guidance for students on uploading drafts

You may be asked to upload copies of draft work to ensure that work you submit for an open book assessment is your own. You will be given clear guidance from the module leader explaining what you need to upload, and when you should capture your work in progress.

What do I need to do?

Track changes

If you are working on a text-based assessment, for example answering essay-type questions, you may be asked to submit a document where changes have been tracked. You can track changes in MS Word and in Mac Pages. Please ensure you use the file format your lecturer has specified.

Save drafts

You might be asked to save a draft copy of your work at specified points during the timed assessment, for example, half-way through or three-quarters of the way through the time period. You will save time and find the process easier if you prepare in advance.

  • Create an easily identifiable folder saved somewhere accessible, e.g. on your desktop.
  • Name your file clearly e.g. Title of the module, student i.d and save it in the folder.
  • Set a timer for the halfway and three-quarters points in your timed assessment – or whenever specified by your module leader, as well as for the submission deadline.
  • When the draft time arrives, save the document that you are working on adding something to indicate this is your draft e.g. ‘v.1_HALFWAY.’
  • DO NOT forget to click ‘Save as’ (F12) rather than ‘Save’ (CTRL + S) and give each draft a different name.
  • Repeat this process for every draft you need to submit.
  • Clearly indicate your final answer e.g. adding FINAL to the file name.

If you are producing handwritten answers and are asked to capture your progress at specific points throughout your permitted time you should follow the procedures above but instead of a text-based file, you will take a photograph or scan of your work at the specified times.

Uploading

You will upload your draft work along with the final answers at the end of the assessment period. You will do this in the additional 45 minutes for downloading/uploading.
