Optional reassessments
If you have passed enough credits overall to progress to the next level of study or to graduate, but have failed one or more modules, then you may be offered the opportunity to take an optional reassessment as a capped resit or an uncapped further first attempt (FFA) for those modules.
Reassessments are available for failed modules (if offered by your examination board). You'll be given information about the decisions exam boards make, including the reassessments you have applied and been entered for, with your end of year results.
If you have been granted mitigating circumstances, your examination board may offer you reassessments for failed modules.
You can choose whether or not to take the optional reassessment in September. Please note:
- If you are a finalist and choose to take an optional reassessment, then your graduation will be delayed and you will not be able to graduate in the summer degree congregations (once the reassessments have been taken, you will graduate at a later date).
- If you are a non-finalist, you will be able to progress to the next year of study whether you choose to take one or more optional reassessments in September or not. However, if you are offered further optional reassessments in the September results, you will need to choose whether to progress or to take those reassessments without residence (i.e. you will not be able to progress to the next year of your course until you have completed them).

Finalist students
Summer Results
If you are a finalist student eligible to graduate and you wish to take your optional reassessments, you need to let the Modules Marks & Assessments Team know by Wednesday 9th July by completing the Optional Resit Form for Finalists. The form to request optional reassessments will open for use just before the results release date. If you do not complete the form by the deadline, you will not be registered for reassessments and will graduate as expected.
September results
If you are a finalist and offered further optional resits following September examinations, you will need to complete the Optional Resit Form for Finalists to confirm your intentions by Friday 31st October. If you do not complete the form, you will not be registered for reassessments and will graduate at the next available opportunity.
It is important to note that if you do decide to take you optional reassessments you will not be able to graduate and attend an Awards Ceremony until such reassessments are completed.
Non-finalist students
Summer Results
Non-finalist students who are eligible to progress to the next level of study are automatically registered for any optional reassessments. If you are a non-finalist student eligible to progress to the next level of study, and you do not wish to take your optional reassessments, you need to let the Modules Marks & Assessments Team know by Friday 8th August by completing the Optional Resit Form for Non-Finalists. The form to request optional reassessments will open for use just before the results release date.
September Results
If you are offered further optional reassessments in the September results, you will need to choose whether to progress or to take a reassessment without residence (i.e. you will not be able to progress to the next year of your course until you have completed them). You must confirm whether you wish to undertake the reassessments without residence by completing the Optional Resit Form for Non-Finalists by Friday 3rd October. If you do not complete the form, you will not be registered for reassessments and will progress to the next year of your course.
Please note that centrally timetabled examinations will still appear on your timetable - however you may ignore this if you have completed a form opting out from the reassessments.
