The man who photobombed De Gaulle - Professor Gary Younge

The 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Paris offers an opportunity to explore the discrepancy between race-based mythologies around the second world war and black involvement in the war.

Professor Gary Younge (University of Manchester) will discuss the decision to ensure only white French troops could be seen to liberate Paris and the scene, the day after the Liberation, in which a Gabonese soldier, Georges Dukson, effectively photobombs General De Gaulle as he parades along the Champs Elysee.

t-shirt making

Students' Union: T-shirt making

  • Date: 22 October, 14:00 - 16:00
  • Location: The Copper Rooms, SU

Students are invited to a t-shirt designing workshop at the SU, offering a creative space to reflect on the power of storytelling and representation, while designing unique T-shirts that symbolise pride and resilience.

It's an opportunity for students to express their voices, celebrate Black culture, and reclaim their own narratives.

Join us in celebrating and honouring Black excellence—past, present, and future. There will also be entertainment from our steel pans duo Mighty Jamma, along with some sweet treats!

    WBS: Reclaiming Narratives

October is Black History Month, and this year's theme is Reclaiming Narratives, marking a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture.

To mark the month, we asked our MBA participants and alumni to share their Black in Business role model or influence with us, celebrating the impact their contributions have had on their individual and collective journeys. Read on to find out who our community selected, and why their stories resonated.

    The Library

    The Library Collections

To celebrate this year’s Black History Month theme, The Library has curated a display in The Library Floor 1 Display Cabinet. The display features information, resources, and books from The Library and Modern Records Centre (MRC) collections relating to The Institute of Race Relations (IRR), The Centre for Research in Ethnic Relations (CRER), and A.Sivanandan, one of the most important and influential black thinkers in the UK. The Sivanandan Collection of the IRR and the CRER have been brought together into the Ethnicity and Migrations Collections, housed on the fifth floor of the University of Warwick Library.
