Continuing our commitment to inclusive student groups at Warwick

At the start of the new academic year, the University of Warwick and Warwick Students’ Union are reaffirming our shared commitment to safe, welcoming and inclusive student activities.

Being part of a student group, sports club or society is a positive part of many students’ experience at Warwick. Our groups are proudly student-run, and their executive committees and members play a vital role in creating positive environments in which new and existing members feel welcome, respected and able to participate freely.

Most student activities reflect these values. However, there may be occasions when individuals experience pressure to take part in activities presented as “normal”, “expected” or part of a group tradition.

These activities may be described as initiations, welcome activities, hazing or adoptions, and may take place at any time of year, on or off campus.

Any activity that relies on pressure, intimidation, humiliation, harassment or an abuse of power is unacceptable and/or dangerous.

This behaviour does not meet our expectations of student conduct as set out in our Dignity Principles.

Activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Sexual assault or harassment
  • Pressure to consume alcohol or abnormal/unpleasant substances, especially as part of drinking games
  • Humiliating activities such as acts of nudity/nakedness or shaving of hair
  • Psychological or physical torment such as being locked in dark rooms
  • Challenges or activities which put participants in dangerous or harmful situations
  • Isolation or ostracising of individuals through the removal of their mobile phones, geographical remoteness or physical isolation
  • Victimisation of a specific group of individuals
  • Activities where abuse of power is used

No student should feel that they must take part in an activity to join a group, remain a member or gain the acceptance of others.

We provide training and support to help clubs, societies and other student groups prevent negative behaviours and maintain safe and inclusive environments. Information, access to resources and confidential support are available through our Report + Support pages.

If you witness or experience concerning behaviour, or are asked to take part in an activity that makes you uncomfortable, we encourage you to seek advice or make a report. All reports will be investigated and where concerns are substantiated, disciplinary action may be taken.

By working together, we can ensure that sport and student activities at Warwick are positive, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone.
