Part-time jobs and earning money: A blog by Miriam, Student Money Assistant

Part-time jobs and earning money: A blog by Miriam, Student Money Assistant

Some students may not consider part-time jobs or ‘side hustles’ because they may find it difficult to fit around university commitments.

However, having a side job does not have to involve owning a business or starting a podcast. Many side jobs can be carried out from your home with a mobile device. You can earn money by reviewing products online, signing up for a paid focus group, completing surveys, or even uploading shopping receipts. Yes, those receipts you throw away can make you extra cash.

My favourite is surveys because they allow you to contribute to topics you are passionate about. You can complete them as and when you like, such as on the bus ride home or during the break between two lectures. Depending on the site/app, on average, they can take from about 4 minutes to about 45 minutes.

Before providing your details it’s important to check that the website is legitimate because scammers may use survey sites to get your information. Have a look at Save the Students’s article on the Best Online Paid Survey Sites for a list of safe websites. I have used various survey apps and websites, and my two favourites are Branded Survey and Qmee. They both have options to collect your rewards as cash or vouchers and with low commitment, you can earn more than £70 a month. The University also has the Warwick Student Panel that conducts focus groups and sends out surveys for the opportunity to win prizes from prize draws. Other ways to earn extra cash include tutoring and selling unwanted items.

Student-friendly side hustles are less likely to make you a millionaire, so it may be worth considering part-time jobs. I saw the advertisement for my current job in one of the weekly newsletters we receive from the university. These newsletters communicate many opportunities and vacancies, making them a very good place to start.

I cannot recommend Unitemps enough. It advertises a range of student-friendly and well-paid opportunities. You can search based on university, distance, or job type. Unitemps now has an office opening on campus in the Warwick SU building, so it's even easier to ask questions and find out more information if you are interested in a particular job vacancy. Indeed-Flex is another excellent place to look; with instant access to work and choosing when and where you work, you can easily earn money while staying on top of your university commitments.
