Working conditions for student visa holders

You are allowed to work for more than 20 hours a week when you are out of term time, including while your visa is still valid after your official course end date.

Please note, if you are a PGT or PGR (postgraduate) student, you are considered to be in term time until your course end date on your CAS has passed. You are also considered in term time during the period you are required resit/repeat/resubmit.

For international PGT students:

Term-time:

  • Defined by the course start and end dates on your CAS.
  • You can work up to 20 hours per week during this period.

Out of term:

  • Begins after the course end date on the CAS until degree conferral date.
  • Confirmation of degree conferral is sent via email, usually in November.

Release of results:

  • If you are required to resit/ repeat/ resubmit, you revert back to ‘term time’ from the date you are notified.
  • If your degree is conferred, you remain out of term and can work full time.
  • Early Completion (up to 4 weeks before CAS course end date)
  • If all academic requirements are completed before CAS course end date, you may request a letter to confirm you are ‘Out of Term’ early.
  • You can find further details under the section of 'Exception'
