My Graduate Job Hunt Experience (How Warwick Supported Me)

My Graduate Job Hunt Experience (How Warwick Supported Me)

Warwick Business School

My name is Mevin, and I’ve just graduated from Warwick Business School with a BSc in Management with Marketing, earning a 2:1. Three years of studying and acquiring knowledge and skills at WBS allowed me to land my dream graduate job, and I’ll walk you through my experience and what comes next for me!

Starting in early September, I will work as a General Management Graduate Trainee for Transport for London/ Transport for London (TFL for short) managed all of the London Underground, Overground services, such as buses and road networks, and even more. TFL is what keeps London, and the world in an indirect sense, moving.

As a General Management Graduate Trainee, my role spans over 2 years. Initially, I’ll be undertaking a 4-week placement in a Zone 1 London Underground station as a customer service assistant. For those unfamiliar with London, a Zone 1 station is within central London, such as King's Cross or Liverpool Street. Working as an assistant here allows me to ground myself within the experience of a front-line employee, who is essential to keeping London moving efficiently and safely. This allows me to understand their experience first-hand-, and how my decisions in other parts of the business (within the office) affect those on the frontline. It also allows me to gain more insight into passenger experiences and their variety of needs.

"In sum, the Warwick experience has been nothing short of life-changing, and without it, I couldn’t see myself where I am today (career-wise or personally)."

Secondly, the programme involves a six-month placement within a business function (office-based), allocated to me by my line manager, based on availability and compatibility with my skillset. As a WBS graduate in Management with Marketing, I’m confident that all the skills I’ve gained over the years will allow me to adapt to any task that comes my way with ease. Afterwards, I’ll have another placement overground (e.g. on the DLR, Bus Network, etc), followed by more office or operation-based rotations within the business.

Overall, I expect the role to be nothing short of fulfilling and exciting. I believe I’ll have a real chance to prove myself and develop professionally, personally, and even academically. I know that I may need to hone my skills, acquire new ones, and undertake training courses to keep up to speed with a dynamic work environment, but that’s what excites me. The opportunity to learn about how TFL operates and works with several partners, utilising precise coordination and collaboration to keep a city as large as London moving, is what drives me to learn more about it every day.

I believe my time at Warwick truly helped me get to where I am today. Firstly, the course, its structure, the teachers, and the content all contributed to my knowledge and skills that enabled me to stand out during interviews and assessment centres. Without the course material I absorbed, or the soft skills such as empathy I developed with time, I wouldn’t have been able to develop the interpersonal relationships or networks I needed to get to where I am now. Secondly, the careers team have developed an excellent set of offline and online tools to help get a head start in the entire application cycle. Digital tools offered by the team (VMock in particular) helped me develop an excellent CV, and in-person appointments to tailor CV’s with feedback from a team member were always available to me. Appointments to practice mock interviews and assessment centres were also on offer by the team, which I thought was outstanding.

Beyond that, I believe my social life, and more importantly, the societies I experienced, changed me and my perspectives for the better. Being able to meet new people in an unfamiliar environment and almost immediately bond over the smallest of things mimics the work environment partially. The social experience at Warwick helped develop my confidence to be myself and connect/network with other people in unfamiliar, dynamic environments. It helped me learn how to adapt my communication style to effectively convey what I mean accurately and efficiently. It allowed me to learn about a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, unique perspectives, and how to respect them. These are all important experiences that directly translate to workplace success.

Additionally, I believe the range of work experience and short-term mobility opportunities Warwick affords its students has been invaluable to my development and experience. I’ve worked across a variety of departments at the university, finding opportunities via Unitemps. This enabled me to get flexible work experience, relevant to my degree pathway of marketing, that enriched me with the experiences I needed to thrive during interviews and assessment centres. Short-term mobility opportunities arranged by the dedicated team allowed me to visit Venice, Macau, China, and Hong Kong. This gave me the intercultural awareness and sensitivity to adapt communications effectively, prevent offensive language in marketing campaigns, and the ability to connect with others despite differences. These experiences truly changed me for the better.

In sum, the Warwick experience has been nothing short of life-changing, and without it, I couldn’t see myself where I am today (career-wise or personally). From the course to the careers team to the range of social and academic opportunities afforded to me over the last three years, they’ve all contributed to my development, definition, and, of course, my dream career.

Studying at Warwick: Support, Safety, and Employability

Mihika - Economics UG student

Choosing to study abroad was undoubtedly a difficult decision. It meant taking a big leap away from home. Although it felt scary at first, I would do it all over again without hesitation. Studying in the UK meant stepping out of my comfort zone, and that is something I believe every student should embrace. Take opportunities you normally wouldn't, step outside your comfort zone, and challenge yourself. I promise it will be worth every second.
