Research interests relate to: health services research, systematic reviews, epidemiology, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, sleep, wellbeing and mindfulness
Karen is an Associate Professor and joined Warwick Medical School in January 2010. Her primary role is to provide advice on research methodology for the Warwick hub of the West Midlands Research Design Service (RDS WM), and more generally to contribute to research within the Medical School. She is currently leading the Warwick hub of the RDS WM having previously been Deputy Director. Since arriving at Warwick she has also been successful in becoming the Principal Investigator on a NIHR Cochrane Programme grant, acquiring incentive funding to update Cochrane reviews, as well as being co-applicant on a number of projects. Karen has considerable experience of performing systematic reviews and most recently worked in the voluntary sector writing systematic reviews for Parkinson's UK. Prior to this she spent several years working at the Department of Social Medicine, University of Bristol performing systematic reviews for the Cochrane Heart Group as well as being actively involved in several primary research projects within the department. During this period Karen was successful in obtaining a Wellcome Trust Fellowship in Health Services Research (HSR) which enabled her to gain further training in HSR by obtaining an MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2003. Karen has held postdoctoral positions in Respiratory Medicine in both the Universities of Liverpool and Edinburgh. She gained her PhD in 1995 which was clinically based and examined the control of respiration during wakefulness and sleep. Her first degree was in Biological and Biochemical Sciences.
Karen's teaching roles include personal tutoring for MBChB students and coaching and mentoring within Health Sciences.
