Why did you choose to study History at Warwick?

My time at Warwick was hugely fulfilling and I am really grateful for the opportunities I had there. I had always had an interest in history but knew studying at university would take that to a totally new level, allowing me to access the amazing resources and teaching that a university - and particularly Warwick - has to offer.

How did your course and experience at Warwick aid your personal and professional development?

In my three years studying at Warwick, I tried to make the very most of my degree. In my second year, I began working as a Research Assistant within the department, getting to work on two excellent projects: a study on liberation theology in Mexico with Dr Rosie Doyle and a Caribbean mapping programme with Dr Dexnell Peters. Between my second and third year, I also conducted an Undergraduate Research Support Scheme (URSS), where I researched the early history of the World Snooker Championship and its foundations in Birmingham. This led to me giving a talk for Birmingham Heritage Week on the subject. Both were extremely rewarding and great ways to build my historical skills and explore new methods of presenting historical research.

Beyond my academic studies, I was also a part of two societies at Warwick: Darts Society and The Boar. Darts became a huge part of my university experience, and I went on to serve on the society committee for two years, first as Secretary and then as President in my final year. It was a great way to unwind and we had lots of fun, travelling across the Midlands to play league games and hosting our own internal tournaments. Without doubt, my proudest achievement was helping to organise and host our first Varsity match at the Copper Rooms last March, where we sold over 200 tickets and achieved an incredible comeback from 4-0 down. It's a day most of us will never forget and are still taking in!

Being on the exec taught me a lot about organisation and leadership and for the last couple of years I have also been involved in University Darts UK, which is the national organising body for university darts. This has allowed me to get even more experience of running events, deploying marketing and media strategies and the day-to-day operations of running a business.

How did you decide what to do after Warwick?

I wasn't sure about what career I wanted to go into when I was coming towards the end of my degree at Warwick, but I knew I wanted to do something creative and in the media world. I had considered journalism, but I didn't want to do another year of studying, and I also wasn't sure that the job would be as fulfilling as I had hoped. I had enjoyed some of the marketing and communications experience I’d had and so started applying for jobs in that area. Back in June 2024, I was fortunate enough to be appointed as a Communications Officer at Leicestershire County Council.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

It's a really interesting and varied role where you get a good insight into the daily work of local government. It is rare to work for such a large employer, which offers contact with over 600,000 people every day, and I have learnt lots in the role already. I'm excited to continue my career journey and will always value the skills Warwick taught me.
