What is your current job or area of study? Please give a brief description of what this entails.
I am a Credit Risk Analyst at Jefferies. My role involves critically analysing counterparts and diligently assessing their creditworthiness.
The analysis requires an understanding of multiple areas, including financial markets, complex trade structures and statistical risk metrics. For this reason, I work closely with trading desks, operations, legal and other areas of the Business in a truly global team.
After just 8 months, I was given the beginnings of my own portfolio of banks to manage. I am also diversifying towards hedge funds and have recently been given my first to add to my portfolio.
I have had the chance to lead meetings, including external diligence calls with funds as well as internal meetings. My biggest project to date has been a complete overhaul of the Early Warning Indicator System, which is currently in its final stages. I also complete composite quantitate investigations daily, and the outcomes dictate the size of the Notional and Potential Exposure credit limits which we assign to each trade.
I have spent time with multiple interns, teaching them the basics of credit risk. My manager volunteered me for these sessions due to my excellent communication skills.
I am a member of the Training and Development pillar; I have facilitated educational talks, and I'm building a website to be a central hub for work-related education within Risk.
I have been given the opportunity to complete the GARP Financial Risk Manager (FRM) Qualification. I have taken the first of 2 exams, achieving marks in the highest quartile in all 4 sections.
The first exam included Foundations of Risk Management, Quantitative Analysis, Financial Markets and Products, and Valuation of Risk Models. The second (and final) exam date is currently scheduled for May 2025.
Why did you choose your degree subject and why did you choose Warwick?
I was good at Maths but wanted to apply my skills in a less abstract way than pure Mathematics, whilst keeping multiple career paths open by learning a breadth of subjects.
Tell us about your favourite memory of your degree
My favourite memory of my degree was my dissertation on charge carrier dynamics of metal halide perovskites, my tutorial sessions with Nicholas Dambrimenal, my fluids lectures with Shreeyas (which I enjoyed so much that I took advanced fluids in 4th year) and my particle lectures with Steve Boyd, who always me laugh.
How did you fill your time outside of your studies?
I played Physics football, ultimate frisbee, and mixed netball and was a member of the Surf and Bass Societies. I played 5 aside football a lot. I worked for Lime recruitment agency and as a Physics Ambassador, for 3 years becoming one of the 'veteran' Ambassadors. I think Gavin Morley may still remember me from this!
Tell us about what happened after graduation. How did you get to your current role?
I applied for many finance roles during my 4th year, having previously interned at PWC. I achieved multiple job offers and accepted Jefferies around Feb 2023.
What’s your proudest achievement so far?
My proudest achievement was getting a first on my degree and dissertation and taking the GARP Financial Risk Manager (FRM) Qualification, achieving marks in the highest quartile in all 4 sections with no prior finance knowledge.
How did your time at Warwick prepare you for life after university? Did you learn any valuable skills? How were you supported?
Warwick gave me problem-solving and organisation skills, especially organisation.
What are your top tips for someone considering a degree at Warwick?
You need to enjoy your subject because it will take up the majority of your time if you want to do well.
What’s one piece of advice you wish you would have had when starting your degree?
Pick modules from their content, not their title.
