King's Birthday Honours 2025

Dr Patrick Roach, Professor Ursula Martin, Katie Farrington

Warwick alumni and honorary graduates from a range of fields have been recognised for their outstanding contributions in the recent King’s Birthday Honours. In total, twelve individuals have been recognised for their dedication, as well as the remarkable difference they make in the world around them.

Professor Ursula Martin CBE FREng FRSE (PhD Mathematics, 1979), Emeritus Professor in the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford has become a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empirefor services to Science and Education, one of the highest possible honours in the Kings New Year Honours, for public service.

Katie Farrington (BA French and History, 1993; MA French Studies, 1994), lately Director General for Social Security Disability and Pensions at the Department for Work and Pensions has become a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in recognition of her public service.

Two alumni have been awarded Commander of the British Empire (CBE), the highest second-class honour bestowed to individuals for making a "highly distinguished, innovative contribution" in a particular activity, or for playing a leading role in regional affairs through achievement or service to the community.

Professor Peter Cox (BSc Physics, 1985), Professor of Climate System Dynamics in Mathematics at the University of Exeter: CBE for services to Science and to Climate Modelling

Dr Patrick Roach (PhD Education, 2005), lately General Secretary, National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers: CBE for services to Education.

Two alumni have become Officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

Janet Gardner (PG Cert, Business Administration, 2020), Chief Executive Officer and Principal at Waltham Forest College: OBE for her services to Further Education.

While Nicola Granger (MBA, 2015), Chief Information and Financial Officer at North Sea Transition: OBE for services to Digital Transformation.

Three alumni also received the rank of Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), marking outstanding achievement or service in public and community life and rewarding people who are committed to making a difference.

Tamsin Daniel (BA Art History, 1992), who is Convenor at Bord Ertach Kernow: MBE for services to heritage, Cornish Distinctiveness, and to the community in Cornwall.

Russell Hardy (BA Economics, 1982; MA Economics, 1984) Chair at Foundation Group: MBE for services to the NHS and to Charity.

While Paul McGee (MA Social Work, 1994) Principal Child and Family Social Worker, and Head of Essex Social Care Academy: MBE for services to Social Care.

Three honorary graduates were also recognised in the honours list.

Professor Dame Susan Bell Burnell DBE FRS FRSE (DSc, 1995) became a Member of the Order of Companions of Honour (CH) for services to Astronomy and Physics and to Diversity. This honour is only held by 65 people at one time.

Actress Jane Lapotaire (Dlitt, 2000): CBE for services to Drama.

And Dr Peter Kent, Chair of Trustees at The Griffin Primary School, Warwickshire: OBE for services to Education.
