Congratulations to the Queen’s New Year’s Honours recipients from our Warwick community.

Alumna Baroness Valerie Amos (BA Sociology, 1976 and LLD, 2000) became the first black person to be appointed the Order of the Garter, the oldest and most senior British Order of Chivalry and one that can only be made by the Queen. In 2020, Baroness Amos became the first-ever black College Head and first female Master at University College, Oxford University.

Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Health and Social Care Service, and Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health, Richard Pengelly (PG Dipl Public Administration, 2011) was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath for services to Health and to the Government.

For his services to the British Sikh and interfaith communities, Jagtar Singh Gill (MSc Information Technology for Manufacture, 1990) received an OBE. He is a prominent member of the Sikh community in Leamington and helped deliver the £11 million Gurdwara Sahib Leamington and Warwick.

Chief Executive Officer of The Rise Partnership, Jayne Jardine was awarded an MBE for her services to education and SEND. Jayne has been a Brent Headteacher and CEO for over 8 years, and also serves on a number of other boards, as well as being an Ofsted inspector.

Honorary graduate and Nobel Prize winner, Professor Sir Paul Nurse Hon FBA (DSc, 2013) was made a Companion of Honour for services to Science and Medicine in the UK and Abroad.

From our donor community, David Harding received a knighthood for his services to philanthropy. The Winton Group supports prizes and an Exoplanet Fellowship at Warwick.

Director of the Garfield Weston Foundation, Philippa Charles received an OBE for services to Arts, Culture and Community Recovery. The Garfield Weston Foundation helped to support the expansion of the newly renovated Warwick Arts Centre.
