Olympics memories at the BBC

The build up to the Olympics looms large on my horizon as I’m part of the BBC's core tech team which delivers the production facilities at the venues and at the UK base in Salford Quays near Manchester. I studied Engineering Science from 1973 to 1976 and went on to have a career in broadcast engineering, which has taken me to many varied places. But I kept coming back to the UK.

I was part of the BBC's team in London 2012. The closing ceremony was watched by 23.6 million people according to BBC stats and I was fortunate to be able to be there in person.

I also worked on Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 which as everyone knows, was postponed until 2021 because of COVID. The systems were rapidly redesigned with more emphasis on production being in Salford, so I didn't get to Tokyo. I retired after that event, but I was flattered to be asked to take part in the Paris Olympics planning starting last year. The draw was too strong, and I accepted.

I had a teeny credit on the very last day of the BBC's coverage. The credits only roll once, and they go on for ages, but I am there!

I'm always mindful that such a long, varied and interesting career all began in Warwick.
