Meet Tanisha Bhatara (BA, English Literature, 2022; MSc, Management, 2024), a distinguished alumna. Her journey at Warwick, shaped by her A-level experiences, and several leaps of faith, led her from English studies to Business. Guided by mentors, she explored new fields and is now on a graduation scheme with EY UKI (Ernst & Young Global Limited UK and Ireland) Assurance Graduate Programme to become a qualified accountant. How did your A-level experiences shape your journey to Warwick?

When I reflect on my journey through A-levels, it brings to mind the pivotal moments that guided me to Warwick. Initially, there were uncertainties about my academic path. While I initially considered a future in medicine, my unexpected strength in English, revealed by my results, prompted a shift in perspective. Unsure about pursuing English as a career, I sought guidance from my teachers who encouraged me to reach out to Warwick for advice. The supportive atmosphere there, with the guidance I received, played a crucial role in turning my doubts into a surprising achievement, particularly in the field of English Literature (First Class BA Hons) and then later a MSC Management at Warwick Business School.

What made you choose Warwick, and how did it shape your academic and career journey?

I vividly remember being in a dilemma, having to choose between two universities. Warwick stood out when they returned my call. In that conversation, they made me feel like I was already part of their community, giving me a strong sense of belonging. This welcoming atmosphere ultimately led me to choose Warwick to study English Literature, a decision that positively impacted my academic and professional life.

During my course, I took a leap of faith and decided to try a module in something completely different. I applied for Business School modules in my third year. Although not many English students take Business School modules, my tutor recognised my potential and encouraged me to do so. I then took up a Foundation course of Marketing and Business Studies and loved it. This experience inspired me to pursue an MSc in Management, which I completed in 2024. Now, I'm on a graduation scheme with EY UKI (Assurance Graduate Programme to become a qualified accountant, something I never dreamed of doing since maths was never my forte in school.

How did you get involved in the Warwick community when you were here?

I actively organised and participated in events across the University. Serving straight away as a fresher’s representative to President of the World Literature (twice-elected), I honed my leadership and teamwork skills. Additionally, I worked as a student ambassador for the English department for two years. This role enhanced my public speaking abilities and communication skills, as I spoke at open days and engaged with prospective students during drop-in sessions.

How did your experiences with the different departments and the Society you joined influence you?

My engagement in these areas became the heartbeat of my University experience. From participating in literary events to collaborating with fellow students on projects, and being part of the official opening of the new Faculty of Arts building, I put my heart and soul into delivering the best results possible.

Also, through work experience, initiatives such as the Open Days at the University were transformative. It took me beyond textbooks, and I was able to engage with prospective students allowing me to share my passion while gaining valuable skills with diverse audiences.

It is when I look back on my time that I feel thankful. It wasn't just about academic success; it also included building strong relationships and being part of a vibrant intellectual community.

What advice would you give to current and prospective students?

Make the most of everything Warwick offers. Get involved in your department, join societies, and attend events. Warwick's education isn't just about academics - it prepares you for life beyond. Take advantage of the opportunities here; they'll shape your future success.
