Quickfire Questions: Chiara Lia Perrone

Why did you choose Warwick?

I am currently in my second year of the Government Policy Scheme in the Civil Service Fast Stream graduate programme. This year, I am working in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.

What are you doing now?

When my dad and I went to view universities, we didn’t really know what to look out for, as I was the first in my family to attend university. We both immediately got a really positive feeling walking around Warwick, and I loved the idea of being at a campus university. We also thought the Dirty Duck pub did an excellent burger, which, joking aside, definitely helped seal the decision!

What motivates you to do what you do? 

Being able to work on current issues that will have a positive impact on people's lives!

How has your time at Warwick influenced what you do now? 

I completed an MBio in Biomedical Science at the University of Warwick. During my Master’s year, I worked in the Greaves Lab at Warwick Medical School on the first non-invasive and non-hormonal treatment for endometriosis. Contributing to research with the potential to improve the lives of millions was really motivating and shaped my desire to pursue a career focused on impact and public good.

Favourite memory? 

It’s really hard to choose a single favourite memory, as I had an amazing five years full of them! If I had to pick one, it would be my year abroad in Barcelona, where I studied biosciences. Alongside studying (often on the beach!) and eating plenty of tapas, I gained a huge amount of confidence and independence from living in a country where I didn’t speak the language to begin with. It was an incredibly rewarding experience, and I had a fantastic time!

Best thing about the Warwick community?

What really stands out to me is how tight-knit the Warwick community is and how willing people are to support one another, not just within my own cohort, but also through friendships formed across different year groups and even after graduating, when I come across other Warwick alumni in my job.

Being on a campus meant I got to know so many people, and I never really felt alone. There were always familiar faces whenever I stepped outside.

I always felt I had people I could turn to for advice or support. My personal tutor was fantastic throughout my time at Warwick, supporting me not only academically but also on a personal level. The wellbeing services at Warwick were also excellent, and together with the strong friendships I built, they played a key role in making my overall experience at Warwick such a positive one.

Favourite place on campus?

I loved sitting on the T‑Bar terrace, especially in the summer, but I may be a little biased, as I worked there and therefore spent quite a bit of time there!
