Quickfire Questions: Duaa Hemade
What is your current role?
I am a Careers Development Manager at De Montfort University London. As the lead for the Careers Development Service, I am responsible for its successful establishment and ongoing delivery, overseeing both strategic planning and the delivery of high-quality career development sessions. My role involves building and maintaining meaningful partnerships through employer engagement and outreach, as well as collaborating closely with academic staff to ensure career support is aligned with curriculum goals. I also provide line management for the Career Development Officer and organise insight days, employer visits, and networking opportunities designed to enhance student employability. This work is driven by a strong commitment to bridging the gap between postgraduate education and industry expectations.
What motivates you to do what you do?
I believe that quality education has the power to transform lives, and it’s certainly transformed mine. By pursuing a postgraduate degree, I was able to build a successful career and support myself and my family through very difficult times. Today, I aspire to support other international students as they navigate new challenges and empower them to stand out in an increasingly competitive global market.
How has your time at Warwick influenced what you do now?
Studying, and later working, at Warwick taught me to hold myself and my work to high standards. Warwick truly creates an environment of excellence. In addition, being a student on an international campus equipped me with a global perspective and broadened my horizons.
The University offered outstanding networking opportunities; from building entrepreneurial friendships at WBS to meeting talented individuals at Warwick Arts Centre, these experiences continue to strongly influence the way I approach my work today.
Why did you choose Warwick?
I could go on listing all the great things about Warwick, but what mattered most to me was how understanding and human they were in response to my situation as a Syrian student. When no English test centres were open in my country, they accepted my Duolingo English exam, making it possible for me to begin my studies. During especially difficult times, staff showed real compassion by offering flexibility with assignment deadlines, and I was supported through counselling sessions provided by the Wellbeing and Student Support team. Without this understanding and support, I genuinely doubt that I would have been able to complete my degree or be where I am today.
Favourite memory?
Very difficult to choose, late-night talks in the accommodation kitchen, sports hub rock up sessions, Christmas meals with the Education Studies team, or class picnics on the grass during spring. These were all wonderful moments I cherish.
Best thing about the Warwick community?
I think what truly sets Warwick apart is the warm, welcoming atmosphere created by both staff and students. During my time there, I was able to speak openly with professors and tutors without unnecessary formalities, which made the academic environment feel supportive and approachable. Staff would regularly ask how I was doing, and it was a genuine question, one that invited a real response. This sense of warmth and mutual respect left a lasting impression on me, and it is something I continue to appreciate to this day.
Favourite place on campus?
Tocil Wood and Nature Reserve.
