Quickfire stories: Genie Jones

An open day can lead you to rethink what you want to study. It did for Genie.

Why did you choose Warwick?

I still remember going to the open day fully expecting to do a different course, but I accidentally went into the room with Kieran File and Jo Angouri, and I was completely blown away by how fun the whole course seemed. I chose it because of those two lecturers alone.

What are you doing now?

Search Engine Optimisation Specialist.

What motivates you to do what you do?

I feel really well equipped to deal with how online language (AI and more organic content) interacts with brands and search engines. It's rare to go into a profession where you have so many valuable insights so early on, but Intercultural Communications applies to 'computer talk' too!

How has your time at Warwick influenced what you do now?

I was given so many speaking opportunities, my research was spotlighted, and my ideas were always workshopped constructively. It gave me the confidence to communicate with people who have been in the industry way longer than me.

Favourite memory?

My friend and I decided to learn Russian for a module where the focus wasn’t on being good at the language but on documenting how we found the learning process. This turned out to be a good thing because we stayed up all night cramming, and then both showed up to the final exam on the wrong day after neglecting to learn the Russian words for the days of the week. We cried and then laughed a lot.

Best thing about the Warwick community?

How individual you feel. The lecturers know you and are excited for you.

Favourite place on campus?

Anywhere selling coffee.

Genie has long red hair and glasses
