Quickfire Questions: Joel Agius

 What is your current role?

After finishing my MSc at Warwick, I received a place on a management graduate scheme provided by MDS Ltd. They place future leaders in positions in multiple companies and business areas across two years, while completing a Level 5 Apprenticeship in Operational Management offered by the Chartered Management Institute. I am currently in my first secondment, where I work as an Agro Procurement Technician in PepsiCo under Walkers brands.

What motivates you to do what you do?

I am consistently motivated by my leadership team. I always find that when I am having a tough time at work or university, making use of the support systems around me and asking the right questions really pushes me to do better. I have never given up thanks to the support of my seniors.

How has your time at Warwick influenced what you do now?

Studying at Warwick made me more confident. Confident in my ability to walk into any room, expert or not, and make the most out of every connection I make. I always wanted to study a master's degree, and it took me 8 years after my bachelor's degree to take the plunge. I'm really glad I chose Warwick to be the place for further study, as I have grown intellectually, and I believe in working together with people from different backgrounds more.

Why did you choose Warwick?

When I was researching what course I wanted to study, I fell upon the perfect one: MSc Intercultural Communication for Business and the Professions at Warwick. I was immediately interested in studying a subject that allows me to reflect on my lived experiences in an academic way and meet people like me who have lived abroad and can share some stories of its impact. It was the perfect choice, and I don't think any other university provided a similar course.

Favourite memory?

My favourite memory is the long(ish) walk between the Junction building and the Piazza. I’ve lost count of how many times I have used that walk to stop working on assignments, catch some fresh air, regroup and grab a coffee or snack on the way. Those moments hold value because the body and the brain need space and I always gave myself frequent time to reflect at peace.

Best thing about the Warwick community?

I think the best thing was being surrounded by a multicultural cohort. I got so many great and innovative ideas that I never would have thought of on my own. Working in a team with some international colleagues garnered really creative ideas which I'm still proud of. I hope to remain friends with these colleagues for a long time and reconnect along our journeys.

Favourite place on campus?

Junction building. I spent most of my time there in the dedicated postgraduate student section on the top floor.
