Kit Brant: from Warwick society president to library specialist
Why did you choose Warwick?
I always liked the idea of a campus-based university where everything is enclosed and you have everything you need in one place, but I also liked how close the University is to multiple other places like Coventry City Centre, Leamington Spa, and Kenilworth (my favourite). I visited the campus on an open day in autumn and thought it was beautiful! I knew I wanted to study education and, after visiting the education department from multiple different universities, I thought the people were so nice and welcoming at Warwick that it made up my mind for me.
What are you doing now?
I am working as a Senior Library Assistant in the Library Customer Support team at the University of Birmingham. Alongside this, I'm completing a Level 2 Customer Service Specialist Apprenticeship which I'm set to complete in 2025.
What motivates you to do what you do?
I really enjoy building up knowledge and sharing that knowledge with people, so working predominantly on a library helpdesk is great for that! I'm really enjoying completing an apprenticeship alongside my job as well, and I think that the extra accumulated knowledge and thinking about my work in a more theoretical sense in online apprenticeship courses and workshops makes me appreciate it even more. I think my motivation comes mostly from enjoying my job and feeling supported by my team and my manager.
How has your time at Warwick influenced what you do now?
Warwick taught me a lot of useful life skills. As for many people, it was the first time I was fully independent and I had been craving that independence for a long time, so the adjustment wasn't as difficult for me as it could have been. I think that led me to throw myself into my academic studies and student societies while at the university, which is where I learned the most. I was part of a number of societies while at the university, eventually becoming president of a society in my final year. I think this taught me a lot about engagement, leadership, and organisation, all of which have helped me to progress my career.
Favourite memory?
This is a tricky question. I think some of them must be show nights with Warwick Pantomime Society! I was in the production of Scooby-Doo, composited, co-directed, and was in Alice in Pantoland, and helped make set pieces for Mario and Luigi. I loved the late-night art department shenanigans, the tiring rehearsals, and the shows finally coming together in the end on show nights.
The rest of my favourite memories from Warwick are with the people I met. In first year, while living in Claycroft, I met my partner who I've now been with for four years and, in the societies I was part of, I made lifelong friends who I live with today. I think that is my absolute favourite part of my time at Warwick as I couldn’t imagine life without these people today.
Best thing about the Warwick community?
I think the best thing about the Warwick community is that it can be so different depending on how you live your life at university and afterwards. There is a great alumni network with regular email communications and a wide range of alumni benefits and resources. If you want to stay connected after graduating, there are many ways to do so. Similarly, I made a lot out of my Warwick community because I was doing a small course and knew everyone in my cohort, threw myself into societies, and took part in lots of activities while at university. If you want to be part of that Warwick community, you absolutely can be. But if these things are not for you, you don't have to join societies and go to alumni events etc. You can get out exactly what you want to.
Favourite place on campus?
Obligatory answer: The Koan. Real answer: I spent a lot of time in the Student Union building, in the Dirty Duck, in T-bar, on the upstairs benches and pool tables, and at book sales on the ground floor. I think that building is my favourite.
