Quickfire Questions with Nazym Kairatkyzy

Having realised she lives for all things media and culture, Nazym is forging a career for herself in social media marketing.

Why did you choose Warwick?

I was carefully looking for a programme in Media Studies in the UK, as (inspired by Jane Austen novels) it was my dream to study in the UK. It was my professional aspiration to get a qualification to work in the media industry. The curriculum of Global Media and Communication was perfect for me. I also visited several events organised in my city (Astana) by Warwick representative Nadia Golenischeva. These events made me feel like a part of Warwick before I even arrived, and she helped me A LOT with visa applications.

What are you doing now?

I am working in two roles currently:

1. Social Media Manager at a London-based media consulting company - Carving Consulting.

2. Social Media Manager at the Marketing Department of Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan.

What motivates you to do what you do?

I am excited about all things media and culture. I think the media industry has the tools to motivate people to make certain decisions, and the social part of it is arguably the most important aspect today. Social media is also evolving each day, with new updates and new platforms to reach different audiences. That's why I am building a career in social media marketing.

How has your time at Warwick influenced what you do now?

Immensely. Prior to Warwick, I don't think I was qualified for the jobs I do currently. Aside from just knowing what's trending on social media, Warwick taught me the ethics of media, the notions of power, and decision-making in the industry. Moreover, being an international student and getting to know so many professionals - local and international - was very inspirational and helped me build valuable networks. At one of the classes, we had a visiting guest who organised a traineeship, to which I got accepted and completed right after the Summer Term in London. This led me to securing my first role in social media at a London museum, an internship at a social media agency, and my current two jobs.

Favourite memory?

The last day in class at the end of the summer term. The whole class felt nostalgic already, and we went to take a group picture on the stairs at FAB - all happy and grateful to have met each other. Next was our graduation in January 2025, when I got to see some of my professors and classmates, sharing this very special memory of becoming a Warwick alum.

Best thing about the Warwick community?

It’s very supportive and kind - from classmates and faculty to career advisers, everyone at Warwick was welcoming and made every day feel like a dream being on campus. The different events celebrating various cultures felt amazing, giving me the chance to get to know so many cultures, stories, and people.
