Quickfire Questions with Rebecca May Geddes
Rebecca has found a passion teaching English overseas. As a second language teacher of English, she currently works in a private language institution in China, teaching children aged 6-15.
Why did you choose Warwick?
I chose Warwick because it offered a more global approach to the modules (specific to my MA course), allowing me to expand my worldview and consider perspectives from outside the UK.
What motivates you to do what you do?
What pushed me towards the teaching profession is my desire to help people grow into their best and most confident selves. In every individual, there is an untapped potential waiting to be unleashed with the help of a mentor. Knowing that I have contributed to some degree, even if only a little, provides me with the greatest satisfaction. Sometimes, it just takes someone with the right tools and resources to help individuals reach this potential.
How has your time at Warwick influenced what you do now?
It encouraged me to become a better communicator, show more understanding, patience, and empathy in social interactions, and engage in regular teamwork.
Favourite memory?
My favourite memory by far would be our classroom seminars, guided by our lecturers, which were designed to engage us in debate, working as a team to provide arguments for and against a position. This helped us to become more conscious of different worldviews.
Best thing about the Warwick community?
The best thing was the outside (of classroom) support offered by a range of staff members, allowing students to feel encouraged and supported throughout their academic journey.
Favourite place on campus?
The library, without a doubt! It offers plenty of group spaces to work on projects and assignments together.
