Quickfire Questions: Sophie Frankpitt

From studying abroad in Amsterdam to finding a passion for research, Sophie always felt at home studying Linguistics

Why did you choose Warwick?

I chose Warwick because I immediately felt at home in the Linguistics Department. It felt like a happy place to be because it's a small community where everyone knows each other. I also chose Warwick because my course is so unique - I loved the strong focus on using Linguistics to solve social issues, and the extensive research training and experience. We were given independence to conduct our own research projects even from first year, and we were always encouraged to ask questions, voice our opinions, and learn from each other. The professors made so much space for us to learn in creative and interesting ways!

What are you doing now?

I'm a Research Assistant at a social research agency in London.

What motivates you to do what you do?

It's important for me to use language and research in understanding social issues and solving problems. I'm motivated to do what I do because it matters to me, and I love using Linguistics to make a positive impact.

How has your time at Warwick influenced what you do now?

I love Linguistics. Studying something that filled me with so much joy has given me so much purpose and drive. At Warwick, I learnt that my interests are in language, politics, and social justice, and I discovered that I'm passionate about research. The opportunities I had to conduct my own research projects, and the independence I had to develop my analytical skills, really helped to show me what I'm good at and how I enjoy learning. The year I spent studying in Amsterdam was also very influential because it gave me so much confidence, independence, and resilience, all of which have been instrumental for navigating a complex graduate world.

Favourite memory?

My favourite memory from my degree is from my year abroad in Amsterdam. I studied Gender and Diversity at Vrije Universiteit and lived with over 25 international students throughout the year. I got to travel across the Netherlands and nearby countries, meet some of my closest friends, and develop so much independence and confidence. It was a life-changing year, and I'd love to move back one day.

Best thing about the Warwick community?

The best thing about the Warwick community is how kind it is. I started university during the pandemic and lockdown which was really hard, but it showed me from day one how caring the friends, course-mates, and professors I met at Warwick are.

Favourite place on campus?

My favourite place is, of course, the Linguistics building!
