Some useful resources:

Departmental Handbook 2026/27 – All the key information that you need!

Essay Cover Sheet – Fill in and attach this to every essay you submit to Tabula!

Department Style Guide – How to cite your sources! What footnotes and bibliographies should look like.

Staff Page – Contact details for the staff in the department.

List of First Year Modules and List of Honours Modules – Check the number of CATS for each module and details of the convenor.

Study Café: Thursdays, 11:30-12:30 in the Classics Common Room (Faculty of Arts Building, Floor 2).

These are really informal sessions where you can ask any questions you have about anything to do with your course or academic life, or even just have a chat and a break from studying! No question is too small! Look out for emails about what the special topic will be for each session.

!! There will be tea, coffee, and biscuits provided !! It would be very helpful if you could bring your own cup/mug, but it is not essential!

Study Skills Sessions: Fridays, 12-1 (H1.49A – Humanities Building, Floor 1).

These sessions will be more focused on how to approach certain assessments, strategies for getting the most out of your revision, and other study-related topics.

Schedule:

Term 1

6th November: Gobbets. This is especially important to first-year students (I remember being very confused the first time I googled the word 'gobbet' as a fresher, so you're not alone in this one!), but anyone is welcome to come along.

13th November: READING WEEK – NO SESSION

20th November: Finding and Using Primary Sources. Some advice on how to find primary sources and use them in your essays to get the top marks!

27th November: Referencing, Citing, and Bibliographies. I'll go through what your references and citations should look like and how to correctly format a bibliography. It can be confusing at times, but we'll get through it together!

4th December: Essay Planning and Writing. Whether you're a first-year preparing for your first undergraduate essays or if you just need some advice on how to plan and structure your essays, this one is for you!

11th December: Finding and Using Secondary Reading. It can be difficult to find relevant literature for essays or just to learn more about a topic over the vacation. I'll show you some useful tools to help find what you're looking for.
