Warwick Classics Network - our Partners

The A. G. Leventis Foundation

Established in May 1979, the A. G. Leventis Foundation is the outcome of the vision of the Cypriot entrepreneur Anastasios G. Leventis (1902-1978), who laid the bases of its focus on society, education and culture. Now in its fourth decade, the Foundation retains its adherence to these priorities, keenly supporting the dissemination of Greek and Cypriot cultural heritage, as well as extensive public benefits programs, pioneering environmental protection projects, and medical research.

The WCN was supported from 30th April 2019 by the generous funding of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, and in 2021 we are pleased to announce that the foundation will continue to support the WCN for a further 5 years. This generous funding will be used to support events such as our annual Teachers Day and Ancient Worlds Study Day, and to build on the strong ties already developed between the Classics Department at Warwick with local schools and heritage institutions, and with schools across the country.

Graham and Joanna Barker

We are proud to announce that from April 2021, the WCN will be receiving funding from Graham and Joanna Barker to support the work of the WCN for the next 5 years. Graham studied for his MA in Classics here at Warwick, specialising in numismatics, and we are very pleased to accept his and Joanna's generous gift which will keep them involved in the Dept for years to come. This funding will allow Dr Paul Grigsby to continue in his role with WCN as Research Fellow in Outreach in the dept. of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Warwick, and will allow the WCN to continue to develop and grow. We are excited about what the next 5 years will bring and are honoured to help these generous people support the study of Classics.

Classics for All

The charity Classics For All raises funds to enable schools, many in areas of high deprivation, to study Latin, Ancient History, Classical Civilisation and Ancient Greek. They offer funding to both primary and secondary schools, often to launch classics for the first time.

Since its first grant awards in 2011, the charity has awarded a total of more than £920,000 in grants, reaching 700 schools and benefiting more than 40,000 pupils. In 2018 Classics for All aim to give out £300,000 to schools and other regional classics networks.

Classics for All provided funds for the initial creation of the WCN and organisation of the 'Emperors, Coins, Frogs and Oracles' event on 2nd July. We at the WCN aim to continue building our close relationship with Classics for All, making Warwick a central hub through which the work of Classics for All and the support for Classics teaching can be co-ordinated across Coventry, Warwickshire, and beyond.

Advocating Classics Education

ACE are an AHRC-funded project to extend classical-subject qualifications across the secondary sector. Under the high profile direction of Prof. Edith Hall, ACE seeks to inspire the teaching of Classics especially in State Schools. It was the offer of partnership with ACE in the organisation of our 'Emperors, Coins, Frogs and Oracles' event which led directly to the creation of the WCN.

Warwick Research and Impact

Warwick aims to become an undisputed global leader in research, with a clear commitment towards Impact, in its broadest sense, across all of our research disciplines. Each of the Faculties has experience of, and is drawing together, new strategies and infrastructures for the support of research impact going forward. The University is committed to developing the ways in which Faculties can achieve this vision, at the individual; departmental; research centre, faculty and institutional level.

WCN has been awarded money from the Warwick Impact Fund for the development of the WCN, and for the creation of a Research Fellow position for Outreach and Impact in the Dept. of Classics and Ancient History. This funding was secured by Prof. Michael Scott, and has been invaluable in the creation of the WCN and in the organisation of our 2nd July launch event.

Warwick Widening Participation and Outreach

At Warwick, the Widening Participation team combines passion, creativity and innovation to inspire young minds and maximise their potential, through unique opportunities both in school and on campus. Their work spans many geographical reaches, supporting young people and their parents/carers to make informed decisions on a local, regional and national level.

Prof. Michael Scott was awarded funding from the Widening Participation Development Fund for the WCN project and for Outreach activities [such as the Ancient Drama festival] in the Dept of Classics and Ancient History. This funding was crucial to the organisation of our 2nd July launch event.
