Senior Department Administrator


The Senior Department Administrator is a key member of the Department’s management team, working across the full breadth of the Department’s operations, supporting the Head of Department in developing the strategic priorities of the Department, and having lead responsibility for all administrative operations of the Department. The Senior Department Administrator's areas of responsibility include:

Strategy and Planning

1. To develop and implement strategies in support of the Department’s priorities and in pursuit of continued success in teaching and research.

2. To prepare and administer the Department’s budget and five year plan, liaising with the University’s Finance Office as required, managing financial systems and assisting with the development and implementation of long-term financial strategies to meet the Department’s objectives.

3. To provide the Department with management information to inform decision-making, and to develop and monitor relevant KPIs to monitor achievement of the Department’s strategic and operational objectives.

Staff

4. To lead and line-manage the Department’s support staff, working collaboratively with senior academic staff in the management of the full range of functions within the Department.

5. To oversee, monitor, and implement personnel procedures and policies for the appointment, development and support of academic and support staff, including those employed on contract or research funding, and to assist in the development of long-term HR strategies to meet the Department’s objectives.

Systems

6. To support the smooth running, and where necessary the development and improvement, of the Department’s systems, processes and procedures for all aspects of its academic activities.

7. To ensure that the Department complies with data protection, freedom of information, confidentiality and sustainability and other legal and ethical responsibilities, and to oversee the management of information to this end.

8. To develop and improve the management of information and publicity for the Department, and to lead staff in the development of the quality and scope of the website, and the use of email and other systems to facilitate effective communications between staff, students and external parties.

Facilities

9. To manage the Department’s facilities, accommodation, and equipment, and to plan and advise on future needs. To ensure that annual bids and reports on accommodation to relevant University bodies are prepared and to oversee minor works and liaise with Estates and others on major works undertaken in the Department.

10. To oversee the Department’s IT functions to ensure that technology is deployed effectively in support of the Department’s aims in relation to teaching, research, and the staff and student experience.
