Award to Malik Hammad Ahmad for the project on Peace Education

For the third time ILÊWASI has made an award to Malik Hammad Ahmad, PhD student in the History Department at the University of Warwick, for the project on Peace Education. From 13 July to 17 July 2015 The Summer School on the Rights of Children and Peace Education will be held at The Youth Institute, Benicassim, Spain. Departmental Doctoral and MA Scholarships

The Director of Graduate Studies is pleased to announce that the Department will be offering a number of full-time doctoral studentships and MA bursaries to outstanding candidates applying for Autumn 2015-16 admission. The awards will be available to both Home-EU and overseas applicants applying to study full-time. In order to be considered, candidates need to have submitted an online University admission application by 12 January 2015.

RHS Martin Lynn Scholarship awarded to George Roberts

The Royal Historical Society has awarded its 2013 Martin Lynn Scholarship to first-year doctoral student George Roberts. This is a highly prestigious and very competitive award, open to students working in the field of African History, which will be used to support George's PhD research on the Cold War in post-independence Dar es Salaam.

George's project is supervised by Professors David Anderson and Daniel Branch. Details are contained in his e-portfolio.

RHS Rees Davies 2013 Prize awarded to Mara Gregory (MA in History of Medicine 2012/13)

The Royal Historical Society's Rees Davies Prize for 2013 has been awarded to Mara Gregory (MA in History of Medicine 2012-13) for her dissertation ‘“Beamed Directly to the Children”: School Broadcasting and Sex Education in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s’. The dissertation was supervised by Dr Mathew Thomson.

Judges’ citation: This highly accomplished thesis analyses the production, content and reception of sex education broadcasts by the BBC during the 1960s and 1970s. The author explores these programmes and the controversy they generated as a lens onto wider social debates about sexual behaviour, the ‘permissive society’ and ideas about childhood...

Doctoral Studentship

The Centre for the History of Medicine is delighted to advertise a Home/EU fees only equivalent Doctoral Studentship in the field of the History of Medicine in the Modern period. The successful candidate will also receive a bursary of £3000 (£1000 per annum in each of the first 3 years for full-time students or pro rata for part-time students), to defray research expenses. After a successful MPhil to PhD upgrade the post holder will be offered the opportunity for paid teaching of undergraduate seminars within the Department of History. Other opportunities for paid research work may become available depending on the successful candidate’s interests.

Applicants will be considered for an October 2014 start date. Candidates must have successfully completed a Taught MA or MA by Research within the history of medicine or associated field. The deadline for all information to be submitted is 12 noon, Friday 28th February 2014. Marie Curie Doctoral Studentship in African History

The History Department at the University of Warwick is able to offer a 3-year doctoral scholarship for research on the Environmental History of Africa, commencing in October 2013, under the supervision of Professor David Anderson.

The scholarship will cover fees (paid directly) and a living allowance to the value of £37,831 gross per annum, provided through an employment contract adhering to standard FP7 Marie Curie guidelines. The scholarship will also provide an additional monthly mobility allowance depending on family situation. Project funds will also cover field costs and travel.

Applications, including a CV, covering letter, and the names of two referees, must be received by 21 June 2013. Interviews with shortlisted candidates are expected to be conducted between 1–5 July 2013, via skype or google hangout.
