This second-year undergraduate option module provides students with an opportunity to study the recent history of Western Europe from the perspective of social movements contesting the power of western European elites. Using a comparative perspective it expands on issues briefly touched on by the first-year core module, 'The Making of the Modern World'.

This module introduces students to one key force shaping western European societies since the 1960s: social movements and the various forms of protest associated with these phenomena. The module is designed to underscore the transnational nature and dimension of many of the most important political, social and cultural features of post-1960 western European society. It shall develop the critical analytical skills of students by introducing them to a view of post-1960 western European history that emphasises the role played by non-elite individuals and associations in shaping their societies.
