Skills Training

This programme is designed for first year undergraduate students taking Representations of Modern Italy and/or Forms and Fashions in Italian Intellectual Culture to help you with essay writing, research skills and presentation skills. You are expected to view the online podcasts in your own time. Attendance at Skills Seminars and submission of the task in week 7 is compulsory even if you have attended library training in other departments as these aspects of the course are designed specifically for Italian resources.


Week 1: View Lecture 1 of the Academic Writing Programme on successful academic writing for undergraduates

Week 2: SKILLS SEMINAR -Introduction to Library research with Kate Williams: Thursday 9th October 3-4pm in Experimental Teaching Space, Floor 2 of Library.

Week 3: View Lecture 2 of the Academic Writing Programme on decoding assignments

Week 4: SKILLS SEMINAR Researching for your essays and presentations with Kate Williams: Thursday 23rd October 3-4pm in the Library Seminar Room, Floor 2 of Library.

Week 5: View Lecture 4 of the Academic Writing Programme on referencing.

Week 6: Create an annotated reading list based on the information provided in week 4. You can choose to research for your essays, class presentations, or to add to an existing reading list on one specific text or author. Assignment Instructions

Week 7: Submit assignment on Monday 10th November.

Week 8: View Lecture 3 of the Academic Writing Programme on engaging critically with sources.

Week 9: SKILLS SEMINAR Group feedback on the reading list task (Kate Williams). Question and Answer session on essay writing and referencing (Joanne Lee). Time TBC.

Week 10: View Lecture 5 of the Academic Writing Programme on revising and editing your work.
