The first Global Sustainable Development cohort graduated on 24th July. Many congratulations!

Here it is, the year is officially over and the first GSD cohort, who started at Warwick three years ago, has just graduated!

The entire Department is incredibly proud of the 75 students who are now officially Warwick GSD graduates, thrilled to have met their families and friends, and celebrated with them the students’ successes and achievements!

Congratulations to James Rennie and Finn Deacon for winning the 2019 GSD Year 12 Competition!

Global Sustainable Development hosts an annual competition for Year 12 students across the country, encouraging students to think creatively and gain valuable research skills as they learn more about global sustainable development.

We were very impressed with the quality of submissions this year, which were very well researched and well presented. The shortlisted entrants were invited to a Campus Day at Warwick on 29th June, to have a feel of what it means to be a GSD student at Warwick. The day ended with the prize giving, where the following prizes were awarded:

Two GSD students at the Climate Reality Leadership training in Brisbane

On June 5th – 7th, two of our second year GSD students attended the Climate Reality Leadership training in Brisbane. Ellie Church and Hollie Ryan, currently studying at Monash, were trained along with 800 other people by Al Gore amongst other professionals, scientists, communicators and leaders. After successfully completing the training, they now join nearly 20,000 other trained leaders, and are required to complete ’10 Acts of Leaderships’ per year.

Two GSD students win Warwick 2019 Outstanding Student Contribution Awards (OSCAs)!

Many congratulations to Hannah Abdel-Hadi and Liam Shah, two of our GSD finalists, who have been jointly awarded one of the University's 2019 OSCAs. The awards will be presented to them at the GSD graduation ceremony, on 24th July.

Free survey data set published by GSD Assistant Professor Marco J Haenssgen

A new social survey data set can be accessed free of charge for research and teaching to shine new light on antibiotic use, marginalisation, and rural treatment-seeking behaviour in Thailand and Laos. Published today on the UK Data Service platform, GSD Assistant Prof Marco J Haenssgen and his team have made available a crucial new resource for understanding the social context of drug resistance. As part of the project “Antibiotics and Activity Spaces”, the researchers completed 5,885 survey interviews that enable both provincial-level estimates and detailed village-level analyses of rural health behaviours.


GSD ranked 5th in UK in the Guardian University Guide!

We are delighted to announce that Global Sustainable Development has been ranked 5th out of 66 UK departments in the Guardian University Guide subject league tables published on Friday 7th June 2019. This places the department in the 'top 5' in the country, among leading departments in Geography and Environmental Studies, such as St Andrews, Oxford, Durham and Cambridge.


GSD Assistant Professor Publishes Research on Mobile Phones in Developing Countries

Published in the latest issue of The Journal of Development Studies, Assistant Professor Marco J Haenssgen challenges the problematic myth of ubiquitous mobile phones in low- and middle-income countries.

Professor Cathia Jenainati is a multidisciplinary academic whose teaching and research interests range from Literature to Enviromental Studies. She is the Head of the School for Cross-faculty Studies.

Dr. Theobald Theodory is a social scientist focusing on environment and natural resource management. He has published extensively in areas of climate change adaptation, land investments, water resources governance and natural resources management.


GSD student and GLOBUS Editor-in-Chief speaking at event 'A Wilder Future: The Need for a Strong Environment Act' (Thursday 9th May at 6pm)

Come along to an insightful Wilder Future evening and find out what you can do to help to achieve nature's recovery. Hear from leading conservationists, academics and our GSD student and GLOBUS Editor-in-Chief Todd Olive!

Further information on the event (organised by a partnership between Warwick University, Coventry University, the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and the NUS) is available here. Keynote speakers include Sir John Lawton and Baroness Parminter.

The event takes place on Thursday 9th May in the Oculus Building (OC1.05). Doors open at 6pm (event starts at 6:45pm).

Tickets are free, but booking is required.
