Professor Miller is currently the Chief Investigator of the NIHR funded (~£1.5million) FOUND Clinical Trial: Case finding of obstructive sleep apnoea in primary care using a novel device a randomised controlled trial: FOUND (Finding OSA Using a Novel Device). She has employed a translational medicine approach to research. Her work spans a number of inter-connecting disciplines, including, biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, epidemiology, medical statistics and population health science. She is particularly interested in inflammatory mechanisms and their relationship to metabolic abnormalities and cardiovascular risk in individuals of different ethnic origins. She has established a programme of national and international research in cardiovascular biochemistry and epidemiology. She co-established a 'Sleep, Health and Society' research programme, at Warwick University and leads the 'Sleep Medicine' Special Study Module for the postgraduate Medical Degree Course. She is a member of Editorial Boards for International Journals and has published >130 peer-review papers & book chapters and has published two books on Sleep, Health and Society with a hi-index of 39 and nearly 10,000 citations.
Michelle took up her position as an Associate Professor in Biochemical Medicine at Warwick in 2005, was promoted to Reader in 2008 and Professor in 2022. Her first degree from London University (Royal Holloway College) was in Medical Biochemistry after which she worked in the routine Clinical Chemistry department at St Helier Hospital before taking up a research position at Charing Cross Hospital Blood Pressure Unit. She transferred with the Unit to St George's Hospital Medical School in October 1989 and completed her part-time PhD 'Biochemical Regulation of Intracellular Calcium in Essential Hypertension' in 1995. As the principal investigator on a British Heart Foundation project, she developed her own independent research programme investigating cellular adhesion and oxidation in different ethnic groups. In addition, she developed a programme of international research working on the Olivetti and IMMIDIET studies as well as continuing her work on the Wandsworth Heart and Stroke Study (WHSS). In 2004 she took up a research position at University College London investigating 'Genes, Society and Health'. Michelle was awarded an Honorary Senior Research Fellowship on her departure, and she continues to work on the Whitehall II and English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). Michelle was appointed as the Clinical Sciences Research Institute's 'Designated Person' for the Human Tissue Authority from 2006-2008 and in 2009 was appointed the Human Tissue Authority 'Designated Individual' for the University of Warwick. She leads the 'Sleep Medicine' Special Study Module for the postgraduate Medical Student Course. She was awarded Membership of the Academy of Medical Educators in 2011 (FHEA equivalence). She was awarded Fellowship by distinction of the Faculty of Public Health (FFPH) in 2011, Fellowship of the American Heart Association (FAHA) in 2013 and Fellowship of the British Hypertension Society (FBHS) in 2015. Currently Michelle works part time and leads the Sleep Health and Society Research Programme and Chief Investigator for the FOUND trial. She is a Sleep Medicine Special Module Lead, a supervisor for PhD/ Masters students and, a co-lead of the Womans Academic Network. Until 2023 she was also an Academic Lead for Post-Graduate Research and co-chair for the Athena Swan teaching sub-committee. Michelle is also a member of various scientific committees including the British Sleep Society Executive Committee.
