Research Interests

Professor Waugh's interests are mainly in diabetes including incidence of type 1 in Scottish children, and trials including the REPOSE trial of insulin pumps and structured education, the DIAMONDS trial of different lasers in diabetic macular oedema, the EMERALDs trial of different methods of follow-up of treated diabetic eye disease, the PEARL pilot trial of earlier laser photocoagulation, and studies in gestational diabetes. He has been involved in many health technology assessments, mainly for NICE but also for National Screening Committee and Department of Health. Recent work has included photocoagulation in diabetic retinopathy, the SGLT2 inhibitors in type 2 diabetes, and autologous chondrocyte implantation. Past research experience includes screening topics including cervical screening (TOMBOLA trial), cystic fibrosis related diabetes, hyperglycaemia in pregnancy and for type 2 diabetes.

Biography

MB, ChB Edinburgh. General training in general medicine (MRCP UK), anaesthetics (DA), geriatrics and general practice, before training in public health medicine (MPH and MFPHM). Consultant in public health medicine in Tayside 1986-1993 and Grampian 1993-99. Several spells as acting DPH, Tayside January to April 1993, Grampian and Shetland most of 1999. While in Grampian, set up and directed the first Scottish HTA centre, SHPIC. Moved to University of Southampton in 2000 where directed the Southampton Health Technology Assessments Centre from set-up in 2000, to departure in November 2002. Appointed prof of PHM in University of Aberdeen December 2002, and led the Aberdeen technology assessment report group supporting NICE appraisals till end March 2011. Member of NICE Appraisal Committee 2001 to 2005. Joined Warwick Evidence in June 2011. Completed the Munros 1991.
