Trophoblast Fusion,Placental Function,Preeclampsia,Obstetric Endocrine Disorders (Obesity & Diabetes)

Manu Vatish has been at Warwick Medical School since 2003. He is clinically trained having done preclinical medicine at Oxford. He then intercalated a D.Phil studying ion transport across the human placenta. This was a basic science project investigating regulation of transport across brush border and basal membrane vesicles from the syncytiotrophoblast. Clinical studies were completed at Cambridge. He is trained as an obstetrician specializing in high-risk pregnancy (maternal medicine) and leads a research group examining placental function in preeclampsia, obesity and diabetes. He was awarded the Fulbright Distinguished Scholar award in 2008-9 which allowed him to spend a year at Albert Einstein College of Medicine under the mentorship of Professor Jeffrey Pessin. Here, he developed a Fluorescent Activated Cell Sorting assay for trophoblast fusion. A Churchill Fellowship in 2011 allowed him to utilize this to uncover the role of key molecules involved in energy sensing being involved in the fusion process.
