Advanced Leaders Programme

The Advanced Leaders Programme trains healthcare professionals with established expertise in diabetes to facilitate and teach the University of Warwick assessed and accredited courses in their local district.

Courses available in local districts include:

  • Certificate in Diabetes Care (CIDC)
  • Management of Diabetes in Hospital and Clinical Areas (MDHCA)
  • Optimising Glycaemic control

This is a 1-2 day residential programme held at the University of Warwick. The cost of the Advanced Leaders' course also includes delivery of your first course with 25 students. Please contact the course co-ordinator for current charges.

Advanced Leaders are expected to:

  • Be a skilled and credible practitioner
  • Have proven ability to facilitate, enable and support service developments
  • Be proactive in championing change and enlisting the help of others
About the advanced leaders course:

This leadership course is about facilitating change in the delivery of diabetes care in local areas. It prepares Advanced Leaders to motivate other people, deliver high quality multi-disciplinary education and achieve service improvement by applying learning to the practical application of managing diabetes.

Advanced Leaders learn about their role and responsibilities in planning, organising and assessing the teaching of the CIDC/MDHCA/OGC courses in association with locally identified experts in diabetes and other relevant subjects.

The cost of this course is normally covered when a Distance Delivery programme is booked by a healthcare organisation

How does the course work?

Advanced Leaders attend a 1 - 2 day residential course at the University of Warwick. Two or more individuals from an area are trained together on the programme which can be adapted to suited specific organisations.

Advanced leaders will then receive a Honorary Contract with the University of Warwick and be provided with the title of Honorary Teaching Fellow in Education and Development.

Who can apply?

People suitable to apply for training as Advanced Leaders are:

  • Diabetes Specialist Nurses
  • Specialist Dietitians
  • Podiatrists
  • General Practitioners with special interest in the care and management of people with diabetes mellitus

A recognised teaching qualification is useful, but not essential, however, applicants must have relevant teaching experience.

They should also have the time, enthusiasm and personal commitment to run the programme within their own locality as this will involve some administration work. Advanced Leaders will need to undertake the marking of formative assessments and provide written feedback to their students and offer support/advice to students undertaking this course.

Advanced Leaders will be assigned a Senior Teaching Fellow from the University of Warwick for the course they run, who can provide support via the telephone/email system.

How do I apply:

Healthcare organisations interested in having Advanced Leaders trained should contact Warwick Medical School and speak to our Diabetes Course Co-ordinator/Senior Teaching Fellow to discuss their particular requirements.
