Applying for a Masters

It is expected that ACFs (NIHR or locally funded) who do not already have a Masters* will engage in the Masters Programme as part of their academic training and may take up to 3 modules in a year. Any additional modules within the same academic year are subject to Supervisor and IAT Lead approval to ensure that your clinical development is not negatively impacted.

Although you can apply for a Masters at any time throughout the academic year, to ensure you are able to complete it within your ACF period please apply at your earliest opportunity to enable you to have the best chance of securing your place on modules in order to complete within the 3 year timeframe. Modules will only be funded if they are started within your ACF period. You are expected to attend all the necessary modules and to complete assessments.

The professional project or dissertation module (final Master’s project) begins each academic year in September and should be undertaken in the final full academic year of your fellowship. If your ACF is for less than 3 years (which is often the case for locally funded ACFs) it is imperative that you consider when you will need to begin your professional project. Please note that the project or dissertation is a new project that must be undertaken during the module of study and cannot be the presentation of research that you have already completed.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You are not permitted to be enrolled on more than 1 higher degree programme at any time either at a single institution or different institutions. It is not possible to be enrolled for a Masters degree or stand-alone Masters modules and enrolled for a PhD simultaneously. If you are considering undertaking a PhD or Fellowship, please discuss this with your academic supervisor and consult with the IAT Leads to explore the best options to support your career pathway. Details about going Out Of programme can be found on the NIHR website and in the Medical Gold Guide.

*If you already have a Masters or higher degree it is possible to do standalone modules as Postgraduate Awards. For PGAs you need to apply online for the individual module of interest and are expected to complete the modules and assessments and achieve accreditation. The Portfolio teams are happy to answer any questions.

How to apply

You will need to apply online and pay for registration fees. You will need to upload your degree transcript/certificate. With regards to the funding section within the online application, the ACF should state the source of funding as ‘Sponsor’, percentage of funding from this source state ‘100%’, name of sponsor ‘WMS ACF’. Once the ACF has accepted their place, the Portfolio team will then follow up the ‘sponsor’ information. You will be asked to complete the ‘Financial arrangements for Postgraduate Students’ form by the Portfolio Team, and at that point must indicate that WMS is your sponsor (and will cover the fees). International ACFs will be provided with a university bursary to cover additional international MSc costs.

Please ask your academic Supervisor to be your referee. They need to provide a simple statement, for example, "As the applicant's supervisor I endorse their application. I confirm they have an appropriate academic background and are able to commit to the necessary studies to complete the course."
