Year 1 Modules

Year 1 in Chemistry

Welcome to Year 1 in Chemistry at Warwick!

In your first year, you'll take modules that total 120 CATs (credits). Chemistry modules are worth either 15 or 30 CATs. In year 1, you'll mainly take core, mandatory modules totalling 105 CATs. These will cover the foundations of studying chemistry with us. You will be automatically enrolled on your core modules.

Take an external option

You have the option to take a module outside of the Chemistry department. Modules offered by the Language Centre (SMLC) and Warwick Business School (WBS) usually fit well with your timetable. However it is your responsibility to check for any potential timetable clashes.

If you intend to select an external module, please consider the following:

  • Ensure that the external module you choose doesn't conflict with your core chemistry modules or exams. You can check this directly with the department offering the module.
  • While SMLC and WBS modules might align better with your timetable, remember that there are other modules available from various departments. It's your responsibility to explore these options.
  • Keep in mind that external modules may have limited spaces or may not be available to students from external departments.

Made up your mind?

If you know which module you want to take, simply follow the instruction below.

What does that mean?

We've mentioned a few acronyms and terms you might not be familiar with. Further explanations of these are below.

CATS stands for Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme. This system is used to measure and record your achievement in terms of credits. Each module you complete is worth a certain number of credits, and these can be accumulated towards your degree.
