This work demonstrates the first example of a non-hydroxylated synthetic polymer which can mimic the function of antifreeze (glyco) proteins. This demonstrates the core concept that a reductionist approach enables simple polymers to reproduce complex protein function and will find application ranging from cryopreservation, food additives and to improve our basic understanding of ice growth inhibitors.
