Polymorphs of Gallium Oxide

The structures of various polymorphs of gallium oxide, Ga2O3, have been determined for the first time using neutron scattering techniques at ISIS, the UK neutron facility and in situ powder X-ray diffraction using our facilities in the Materials and Analytical Science building at Warwick. This apparantly simple material has many promising applications in electronics and photocatalysis, but structural disorder has previously hampered the determination of crystal structures of several of its polymorphs. The work was performed in the group of Richard Walton by PhD student Helen Playford, now EPSRC postdoctoral researcher at Warwick, in collaboration with the at the STFC ISIS facility at Harwell. A paper describing the work has recently been published in Chemistry, A European Journal.
