Gibson Group: Lewis Blackman
Lewis was part of the Gibson group as a PhD student (2013-2017). He now works as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at CSIRO in Australia. See below for details of Lewis's work whilst a Gibson Group member. BiographyLewis graduated from the University of Southampton in 2012 with a 1st class MChem degree. During his third year at Southampton he undertook a project under Prof. A. Ganeson, where he synthesised and tested ligands for specific potassium ion channels. He then completed a placement at Merck Chemicals Ltd. under the supervision of Dr. Mark Goulding, which involved synthesising materials for electrophoretic display applications. After graduating, he spent a year teaching chemistry and physics in a school in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. In the autumn of 2013, he embarked on a PhD project at the University of Warwick under the joint supervision of Prof. Matthew Gibson and Prof. Rachel O’Reilly, which involves the synthesis of polymer materials for novel applications at the materials and biology interface. Research InterestsLewis' research interests include synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers by reversible deactivation radical polymerisation (RDRP) and their subsequent self-assembly in aqueous solutions. Other interests include characterisation techniques of self-assembled polymer particles, responsive polymer materials, polymerization-induced self-assembly and enzymatic cascade nanoreactors. OutreachLewis is currently a STEM ambassador and has been involved in numerous outreach activities between local schools and the department. |
