Richard Walton

Richard is Professor of Chemistry, Director of the Warwick X-ray Diffraction Research Technology Platform, and Chair of Chemistry Research Committee. His research interests are in solid-state chemistry, spanning the synthesis and characterisation of inorganic materials including porous materials, transition-metal oxides and metal-organic frameworks, and industrial applications in heterogeneous catalysis and energy via various collaborations.

I am a member of the following research groups at Warwick:

Our work focuses on the development of new synthetic methods for the production of functional inorganic materials. This includes control of crystal chemistry and crystal form in one step synthesis for tuning the properties of complex materials including transition-metal oxide materials with properties in electronic and catalytic applications, and porous materials and with sorption properties. We work towards an understanding of the crystallisation of solid-state materials using novel in situ probes, particularly time-resolved powder diffraction. Characterisation of the solid-state using powder X-ray diffraction is a key method for structure determination, including the use of synchotron X-ray and neutron scattering methods at central facilities. Industrial applications of materials chemistry are explored with companies such as Johnson Matthey, and we have collaborations with Brazil, China and Indonesia working on projects related to global challenges around materials for energy-related applications.
